Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What connection types are supported in TinyTERM?

A: TinyTERM supports telnet and SSL/TLS connections. Connections can run over wifi or 3G networks.

Q: Which terminal emulations does TinyTERM include?

A: There are four different emulations available in TinyTERM:

  • IBM 3278-2 (24 x 80)
  • IBM 3278-3 (32 x 80)
  • IBM 3278-4 (43 x 80)
  • IBM 3278-5 (27 x 132)

Q: How much of the emulator screen does the keyboard cover?

A: In portrait mode, the entire emulator screen is visible whether the keyboard is displayed or not. In landscape mode, the keyboard takes up the bottom half of the screen.

But the keyboard doesn't have to cover the emulator screen at all. In landscape orientation, TinyTERM dynamically resizes the emulator window when the keyboard comes up, so that no information gets hidden behind the keys. Or the keyboard can be made transparent, so the emulator text is at full size and can still be read underneath the keyboard.

Finally, pinch zoom allows a portion of the emulator screen to display at full size when the keyboard is not transparent. When zoomed, a finger swipe will move through the display.

Q: The default iPad keyboard doesn't include any TN3270 terminal keys. Does TinyTERM include function keys, arrow keys and the like?

A: Yes. TinyTERM has an extended keyboard that includes function keys PF1-PF24 and PA1-PA3, arrow keys, Ins, Del, Clear and more. The image at right shows the extra keys in landscape mode, using the standard iPad keyboard.

Q: How do I restore the keyboard when it's hidden?

A: Just tap the keyboard button in the TinyTERM title bar.

Q: Can the keyboard be modified?

A: Yes, to allow for virtually any configuration needed. Instructions are on this page.

Q: Will it use an external keyboard?

A: Yes. TinyTERM supports both dock and Bluetooth keyboards.

Q: Will it use the function keys from an external keyboard?

A: We are as yet unable to make the function and arrow keys on an external keyboard work with TinyTERM. It's directly related to the way the keyboard presents itself to the iPad, whether via dock or Bluetooth. There is no way to get those keys recognized by a terminal emulator at present.

To provide for this, TinyTERM ITX 3270 for iPad includes an External Keyboard Supplement layout. This provides PF, arrow and other special keys that external keyboards don't supply.
